Review: Vesper

Written by, directed by and starring Keyvan Sheikhalishahi, Marge Ofenbey (Agnès Godey) shuts herself away from all in a house to flee her sinister and manipulative husband, Walter (Götz Otto). She asks her nephew Christian for help. But, Christian will soon discover the secrets hidden by Marge and Walter. What are Walter’s true intentions? Why is Marge haunted by stars?

There’s an aloof quality to Vesper, while it may seem as though it’s giving you the story, realistically you are being told very little. The actors are using many a phrase but the information contained is surprisingly empty, which leaves the film utterly difficult to figure out. The withholding nature can be attached to mystery but it can also make you feel like you’re missing something.

The film is lacking the lighter, more subtle touch that would come from a more experienced filmmaker and the essence of student film does linger around the film, a few tighter cuts here and there in the editing room and a more smoothly transitioning dialogue would do it wonders. Disregarding that, you can see what the aim is and it’s a worthy attempt but it’s another good example of a starting point, there’s far to go but potential.

If you’re looking for an interesting Short Film to spent a pleasant 20 minutes with then Vesper would be for you.

Verdict: 6/10

  1. The cheetah and I liked this quite a bit too….but one has to remember that Keyvan is still cutting his teeth professionally as a director. We felt he should have stayed strictly behind the camera instead of acting as well. This is a solid review!
